Godfrey Okoye University has reached another significant milestone with the official inauguration of Nigeria’s first specialized university-led DNA Learning and Forensics Centre by the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, at the university’s Ugwuomu campus.

At the commissioning ceremony, Governor Mbah emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation in strengthening security and advancing sustainable development. He described the Centre for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI), established through a partnership between Godfrey Okoye University and the Enugu State Government, as a major investment in modern law enforcement that will enhance criminal investigations and support justice through scientific evidence.

The event was attended by distinguished national and international guests, including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who both praised the facility as a national asset capable of transforming forensic science and justice delivery in Nigeria. Representing the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rev. Fr. Victor Eze also commended the initiative as a landmark achievement for the university, the state, and the Catholic Church.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the DNA Learning Centre Nigeria, Prof. George Ude, noted that the centre demonstrates Africa’s ability to establish institutions that meet global standards. He explained that the facility will serve as a hub for training future forensic scientists, molecular biologists, and public health professionals.

The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and community development. He highlighted that, beyond supporting criminal investigations, the centre will provide paternity and maternity testing services based on scientific evidence and create employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

This groundbreaking facility further strengthens Godfrey Okoye University’s position as a leader in science and research. It provides students with practical, hands-on training in DNA sequencing and forensic analysis, equipping graduates with the advanced skills and real-world experience needed to compete in global scientific, healthcare, and forensic careers.
